The test measures the presence of hundreds of bacteria found in a dog's mouth. It tracks how the composition of these bacteria changes between young, healthy dogs and older dogs experiencing oral inflammation, such as gingivitis. A health score is then reported for the dog's oral microbiome, along with six specific bacteria that may contribute to gingivitis and other oral health complications.

Here is more information about the six specific bacteria reported:

Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis): This bacterium is a major causative agent in the initiation and progression of severe forms of periodontal disease. Minimizing P. gingivalis is beneficial for a dog’s oral health (Nomura et al., 2020).

Campylobacter sp. RM16192: Associated with the initiation and progression of severe forms of periodontal disease, minimizing Campylobacter is also beneficial for a dog’s oral health (Nomura et al., 2020).

Porphyromonas crevioricanis (P. cangingivalis): P. cangingivalis is the most prevalent canine oral bacterial species found in plaque from both healthy gingiva and dogs with early periodontitis. Reducing levels of P. cangingivalis is beneficial for oral health (O’Flynn et al., 2015).

Conchiformibius steedae (C. steedae): Found to be more abundant in dogs with healthier teeth compared to those with less healthy teeth, increasing the amount of C. steedae is advantageous for a dog’s oral health (Wallis et al., 2021).

Moraxella osloensis (M. osloensis): This bacterium is associated with younger dogs, and increasing the levels of M. osloensis is beneficial for oral health.

Rothia aeria (R. aeria): Known to protect against and fight plaque growth, R. aeria tends to decrease in abundance with age. Therefore, increasing the amount of R. aeria is beneficial for oral health (Mazurel et al., 2023).

All bacteria listed above were determined to be associated with age by a recent study by prosperK9. As expected, the three bacteria that should be minimized tend to increase with age, while the three that are beneficial tend to decrease.

The test has been developed to measure the changes in a dog's DNA that occur with age, focusing on epigenetic modifications. By employing a specialized DNA sequencing technique, these modifications can be "read" to infer the biological age and traits of your dog.

The DNA methylation test evaluates several important personality traits in dogs, including energy levels, attention-seeking behavior, fear of strangers, and reactions to nonsocial stimuli. This method is backed by research detailed in a prior study. Below are the traits reported:

Energy:
Reflects dogs that are highly active, playful, and energetic.

Attachment and Attention Seeking:
Describes dogs that prefer to stay near their owners, actively seek affection, and show distress when their owners engage with others.

Stranger-Directed Fear:
Represents a fearful or cautious reaction when approached by unfamiliar individuals.

Nonsocial Fear:
Indicates a fearful response to sudden noises, traffic, and unfamiliar objects, showcasing sensitivity to environmental factors rather than social situations.
